While one car manufacturer after another kisses the MPV goodbye, Volkswagen is coolly introducing a new space giant in the form of the Multivan. The new Volkswagen Multivan can be ordered immediately and remains under 55 mille.
Until now, Volkswagen stuck the name ‘Multivan’ on the passenger car version of the Transporter commercial vehicle. However, the new Multivan is a completely self-contained model. It is a large MPV that, in contrast to the Transporter, which dates back to 2003, is based on the MQB platform. The Volkswagen Multivan can now be ordered and will come to the Netherlands early next year.
Much cheaper
The new Volkswagen Multivan has a starting price of €54,400. This makes it more than €37,000 cheaper than the Multivan based on the Transporter. The new Multivan owes this to its powertrain, which on paper pumps less CO2 into the atmosphere than the machine of the previous Multivan. Unlike its predecessor, the new Multivan does not have a 2.0 TDI diesel engine, but an eHybrid plug-in hybrid powertrain. This 218 hp and 350 Nm plug-in hybrid powertrain, like that of the Passat GTE, consists of a 150 hp 1.4 TSI that works together with a 115 hp electric motor. The plug-in hybrid Multivan has a 13 kWh battery from which the car probably squeezes about 50 electric kilometers. You can drive purely electrically up to a speed of 130 km/h, after which the petrol engine kicks in. The diesel versions are not coming to the Netherlands.
The starting price of €54,400 applies to the basic version of the Multivan, which has Digital Cockpit Pro and a 10-inch multimedia screen as standard. This unnamed entry-level version has two rows of seats with a total of five seats. Alloy wheels, air conditioning and features such as Front Assist and Lane Assist are also standard. Volkswagen also supplies the Multivan as a Life, a version that always has three rows of seats and therefore seven seats. This version has, among other things, a heating function for the rear passengers and, in addition to an electrically opening and closing tailgate, has parking aid at the front and rear. The top version is the Style, a flavor that includes matrix LED headlights, electrically operated sliding doors, a reversing camera, Park Assist and high-gloss black accents to the Multivan.
Volkswagen also supplies a temporary introduction version, the Multivan Energetic. This €59,700 version has standard 18-inch light metal, a glass panoramic roof, privacy glass and a grille that is equipped with a horizontal LED strip. The Multivan Energetic also has an electrically opening and closing tailgate, Park Assist, a sliding table and a multimedia system with 10-inch display.
Although Volkswagen mentions the Multivan in the same breath as ‘T7’ and the Multivan was developed and offered by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the ‘Bulli range’ in the future will consist of three models: the current Transporter, this Multivan and the electric ID.Buzz .
