Hybrid and EV in the middle segment on the rise

The number of car brands that only sell models in fuel variant is decreasing. More and more brands offer the choice of a hybrid or EV variant and omit the diesel altogether. This is reflected in the Top 10 of most sold business cars between €20,000 and €40,000.

Driving in electric form, be it MHEV, PHEV or EV, is becoming increasingly popular. Of the entire top 10, only the Volkswagen Polo and T-Roc do not have a hybrid or EV variant in the range. The Polo remains a top seller with 2,761 registrations in the past six months.

It can also be seen that a number of brands skip the hybrid and give the choice of a petrol or electric variant. Think of the Peugeot 208 and 2008 and the Mini Mini. The Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla and Skoda Octavia are still waiting with an EV. With these models there is plenty to choose from petrol and hybrid versions. Diesel is only possible with the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Polo.

Choice stress is available with the Kia Niro. The car of the year 2022 and number one in the top 10 with 4,361 registrations offers a choice of fuel, hybrid and EV.

A hybrid car is an ideal intermediate step for (business) drivers who want to drive electrically, but still need to get used to the charging process of the car. Plugging in is already necessary with a PHEV, but many kilometers can still be made thanks to the petrol engine that assists when necessary.

Research by the Association of Business Drivers shows that 14 percent of business drivers expect the next car to be a PHEV and that 51 percent of current PHEV drivers will switch to EV. Once an EV has been purchased, this is fine, because no less than 89 percent opt for an EV again with a new car.
