The last few days Androidworld has been dominated by Android 13. Google announced this brand new Android version on August 15, and smartphone manufacturers are cleverly responding to this by releasing their update plans. The next manufacturer to give more details about Android 13 is Nothing.
Nothing Phone (1) and Android 13
Nothing is a completely new player on the smartphone market and this newcomer launched its very first smartphone, the Nothing Phone (1) on 12 July. The Nothing Phone (1) works with Android 12 and its own Nothing OS. The brand has already indicated that the phone will receive Android upgrades for three years, so Android 13, Android 14 and Android 15. The phone can also count on four years of support for security updates.
Now that Google has announced Android 13, people are very curious about the arrival of this version to the Nothing Phone (1). Android Authority made inquiries with the company and got the following response:
We are always working hard to improve the Phone (1) user experience. To ensure this, operating system updates will be made available for regular download. With regard to Android 13, this version will be launched in the first half of 2023 for users of the Phone (1). Before we release it, we want to fine-tune the software upgrade with Nothing’s hardware. We will certainly keep you informed with more information.
This is interesting considering that Nothing OS is quite close to stock Android. “Nothing OS is a fairly bare shell about Android that is very similar to the ‘normal’ Android as Google intended it,” Jelle wrote in his review of the Phone (1). Apparently, Nothing needs more time to adapt their software shell to Android 13. Samsung is expected to release its first stable Android 13 updates in October or November, while this software has quite a lot of customization. Even OnePlus, which has run into some update problems lately, will release Android 13 for a number of OnePlus phones by the end of this year.
In short, owners of the Phone (1) looking forward to a rapid rollout of Android 13 may be disappointed. In the worst-case scenario, they will have to wait until mid-2023. Carl Pei responded to a question about Android 13 last week: “A product is more than just its specs, features, and version numbers.”
