Nothing teases first phone: the Nothing Phone (1): we know this

The new tech company Nothing has announced that it is working on its first smartphone. The details about the device are limited, but it will work with a bare-bones Android shell and an open ecosystem that is also adapted for third-party products.

Nothing Phone (1)

It doesn’t come out of nowhere, the first phone from the new brand Nothing. Nothing is the tech company of Carl Pei, one of the founders of OnePlus. Nothing announces that it is working on a first smartphone with which it says it wants to “wake up the sleeping smartphone market”. That’s what Carl Pei said during a livestream on YouTube

The details that Nothing shares about its Nothing Phone (1) are very limited. We don’t get to see the design yet, but Car Pei already talked about the software. Nothing OS, the company’s software shell, is based on a bare-bones Android experience. The focus is on speed and limited distractions through animations. We can already see an example of the interface with, among other things, the sound recorder and a widget on the home screen. Still, the company mainly wants to work with Google apps and it also swears off bloatware.

Nothing also says that it pays attention to the sound quality of its phone and states that the Phone (1) can count on four years of security updates and three version updates. The brand aims for an open ecosystem. It will make its launcher available in the Play Store in April and it also wants to make integrations with other tech products with its software. Carl Pei gives the Apple Air Pods and Tesla cars as an example.

In its livestream, Nothing further shows partners and it shows Google, Samsung, Qualcomm and Sony, among others. Further details about the Nothing Phone (1) are still missing at the moment and it is not known when Nothing will come out with more news about the device.

Alternative to Apple

It is noteworthy that Nothing already pre-orders its launcher for free for its first phone on the market and that it allows integrations with AirPods. The brand has its own wireless Ear (1) earphones. Yet, according to Carl Pei, that is precisely part of the brand’s strategy.

“If you want products that connect and work seamlessly, Apple is the only choice. The MacBook, the iPhone, the iPad and the AirPods work together the way you want them to,” notes Carl Pei. “But once you leave that ecosystem and opt for a Windows PC or Android phone, everything falls apart. There is no alternative to Apple and that means consumers have no choice and innovation slows down. That’s not how it should be and therefore Nothing is there.”

Finally, Nothing once again calls on the community to co-invest in its projects. You can watch the teaser of the Nothing (1) and Nothing OS in the video below.
