Volkswagen has officially closed the Talagon, a completely new SUV with six or seven seats. The Talagon was developed by the FAW-Volkswagen partnership and will not get European asphalt under its wheels through official channels.

In March, Techzle was already able to show you the first photos of the Volkswagen Talagon, a new SUV from the FAW-Volkswagen partnership. The Talagon was officially presented during the Shanghai Motor Show.

The Volkswagen Talagon is 5.15 meters long and has a wheelbase of 2.98 meters. This is identical to that of the Teramont, which is also installed on the MQB platform, the version of the SUV built by SAIC-Volkswagen that has the name Atlas in the United States. In fact, you should see the Talagon as ‘the Teramont of FAW’, but that is not entirely true. Although the base of the cars is similar, the more than 2 tonne Talagon is about four centimeters longer than the Chinese Teramont. The Talagon is the production version of the SMV Concept shown in 2019, which makes the transition to the Chinese market virtually unchanged.

The Talagon has an almost Passat-like front and has linked LED taillights. Volkswagen’s latest Chinese SUV, like the Teramont (and Teramont X), will be available with a 186 hp 2.0 TSI, a machine that also finds its way to the car in a 220 hp variant. At the top of the engine range is a 299 hp 2.5 TSI, a six-cylinder. The latter has 4Motion four-wheel drive. The Talagon has an interior with many well-known VW features, although the high, floating center console is a striking design element. Behind the wheel, of course, a digital set of instruments, next to it an infotainment system with a specific operating system intended for the Chinese market. Also striking is the way in which the mood lighting is placed on both the door panels and the part of the dashboard for the passenger.

As mentioned, the Talagon is not coming to Europe. Would such an SUV be a welcome addition to the Dutch market? Volkswagen has the Touareg on the menu here, although that is an SUV positioned higher in the market by its MLBevo platform.
