Several car manufacturers had to stop production several times this year, but it is now becoming very colorful at an Opel factory in Germany. The work will be put there until next year.
The Opel plant in Eisenach in the state of Thuringia will close next week and will not open again until the new year. The reason is – how could it be otherwise – the global chip shortage. An Opel spokesperson speaks of an extraordinary situation due to chip shortages, which means that production has to be significantly adjusted.
The Opel Grandland is built in Eisenach. It employs approximately 1,300 employees, who are sent on leave. The Eisenach site also had to interrupt work in August due to the shortage of semiconductors. Other major German car manufacturers, including Volkswagen and Daimler, have also had to shut down production lines because of these shortages.
The fact that work in Eisenach will be halted for at least three months does not mean that Opel Grandland will no longer be built at all. The factory in Sochaux, France, where sister model Peugeot 3008 is also being built, is being continued. There is a good chance that the delivery time for a Grandland will be longer.
