OV chip card: checking in and out

Nowadays we use the OV chip card to travel by public transport. To avoid a fine from a conductor or an incorrectly debited amount, it is important that you check in and out properly while traveling with your OV chip card. In this article we show you by means of a video what you should pay attention to and we list a few points of attention.

We show you how to check in and out at the gates on the train. For tips on watching this video, see “Playing YouTube videos conveniently”.

Would you like to use your OV chip card for a train journey for the first time? In that case, make sure that you activate the OV chip card before traveling by train. You can read more about this in the article ‘The OV chip card’.

In the video you have seen a card reader of the NS. Basically all readers work the same, but they can look different.

Are you traveling by NS train and are you transferring to another NS train? Then there is no need to check out and check in in between. If you do this, you will pay a double starting rate and that is of course a shame.

However, if you have to transfer between two types of transport, you must first check out and then check in again. For example, if you first traveled a bit by metro and then transfer to the tram. Or when you go from the bus to the train.

It can happen that you accidentally check out while you wanted to check in, or vice versa. For example, if you wanted to check whether you checked in or out correctly. Then wait two minutes, then you can check in or check out again.
