Last week, the editors looked back at 2019. Each editor listed their favorite iOS app, iOS game, and Apple product from this year. Can’t read everything? No problem. Here’s an overview of the editors’ picks!
Erwin: Tiktok, Mario Kart Tour and Apple Pay
Erwin’s favorite app this year was TikTok. “It’s a good thing Screen Time on my iPhone doesn’t have an annual summary, because the amount of hours I’ve put into TikTok isn’t something to be proud of. But this app is so much fun.”
Mario Kart Tour was nominated by Erwin as the favorite iOS game. “Mario Kart Tour is definitely not the best game I’ve played this year, but since its release there’s hardly been a day that I haven’t started the game.”

The Apple product of the year, according to Erwin, was Apple Pay. “It is so easy to pay for things, provided the ATM is positioned correctly, of course.”

Wouter: Google Tasks, CoD: Mobile and iPad Air 2019
Wouter’s favorite app is one that didn’t come out this year, but one that he discovered this year. “This year I used the app a lot and that’s pretty cool about Tasks, because I was never really a fan of tasks apps before that.”
Call of Duty: Mobile was often started by Wouter this year. “The game is actually just as fun as the console versions: the controls work fine, games don’t last too long and it’s still fun (even after hours of playing) to unlock new weapons, skins and other items.”

In addition, the iPad Air (2019) was chosen by Wouter as Apple product of the year. “The iPad Air (2019) isn’t the most exciting product released this year, but it’s the one I’ve used the most.”

Dilara: Waze, Restaurant Dash, iPhone 11 Pro
The favorite app of 2019 was for Dilara Waze. “This app is much more than just a navigation app: it’s actually indispensable when you get into the car.”
Dilara’s favorite iOS game is Restaurant Dash: Gordon Ramsay. “Restaurant Dash is one of my go-to games. It’s basically puzzling, speed and tactics in one.”

The iPhone 11 Pro became the Apple product of the year for Dilara. “Apple has delivered another top smartphone this year with the iPhone 11 Pro. The successor to the iPhone XS Max is far from cheap, but you get a very good smartphone in return.”

Lars: Spark, Grindstone and the AirPods Pro
Lars’ favorite app is the Spark mail app. “This smart mailbox mainly takes a lot of work off your hands by doing things independently.”
The game of the year for Lars became an Apple Arcade game: Grindstone. “In Grindstone, you take on the role of a muscular cartoonish Viking who uses his sword to fight his way through countless monsters. It’s a simple puzzle game that goes surprisingly deep.”

Finally, Lars chose (how could it be otherwise) for the AirPods Pro. “The AirPods Pro do everything I hoped for and more. The first real upgrade of the AirPods add noise cancellation, turning a noisy train compartment into an oasis of calm.”

Michel: Edo Agenda, Hyper Light Drifter and AirPods Pro
Michel’s favorite app is the practical calendar app Edo Agenda. “The program describes itself as the agenda for freelancers, and that’s quite right. It is ideal when you have many different kinds of activities.”
Michel’s favorite game is Hyper Light Drifter. “In the beautifully designed retro platformer, you climb and clamber past obstacles while crushing enemies. An ideal game for in between.”

Michel also thinks the AirPods Pro is the best Apple product of 2019. “In recent weeks I have also been spotting more and more AirPods Pro with students. And I agree: they are the best earbuds Apple has ever made.”
