Peugeot has let someone sit on the clay model of a new SUV. Peugeot is also coming with an SUV with a strikingly sloping roofline. On this set of spy plates, that newcomer, who may be called 4008, is clearly visible from all angles for the first time.
SUVs with a flattened roof don’t seem like the most practical option to go for, but consumers don’t do that much, so car brands are eager to fill this niche. These spy photos show a new high-legged Peugeot, a car with which the brand seems to want to build a bridge between the 308 and the 3008 in terms of roofline.
If the car in these photos does indeed become a sportier SUV that leans on the technology of the 308, then it is not inconceivable that the model will be called 4008 in Europe. We consciously write ‘in Europe’, as Peugeot currently also sells a 4008 in China. The Chinese 4008 is a longer version of the 3008 known here, a car that is still a size smaller than the 5008. The 3008 is called 4008 in China because Peugeot sold the previous generation 3008 in modified form until recently. We also know the model name 4008 in Europe. Citroën came up with the C4 Aircross based on the Mitsubishi ASX in 2012 and Peugeot followed with the 4008 also based on that Japanese crossover. In contrast to the ASX and the C-Crosser the 4008 was not delivered in the Netherlands.

Okay, back to the possibly new 4008. The test model in these photos, of course, betrays its identity with its visible LED tusks running down the bumper from the corners of the headlights. The current 3008 also received those LED strips during a facelift, just like the 5008 in 2020. The ‘4008’ has a steeply sloping roofline and a strikingly rising shoulderline. At the back we can already see fragments of the flat LED units.
We aim for this new, sleeker Peugeot SUV to share its basis with the new 308 and therefore also with the next generation of the 3008. This means that the 4008 is on a further developed version of the well-known EMP2 platform, a basis that naturally brings plug-in hybrid technology to the SUV. The EMP2 platform is now also suitable for fully electric powertrains, as the 308 will also receive a fully electric version. It is therefore expected that Peugeot will also carry an electric version of this 4008. So an e-4008. We do not expect this new SUV from Peugeot on the market before next year. The Renault Arkana and Mazda CX-30 can therefore continue to breathe for a while.
