It was the expectation for the Apple Watch Ultra in 2023: a dark variant would appear in addition to the light titanium version. All rumors indicated that the black version of the Apple Watch was planned, but the black version did not materialize at the WWDC. A new generation of the Apple Watch Ultra was released, which again only has a light titanium casing.

Apple has never made any statements about a black Apple Watch Ultra, but new photos now show that the company was indeed working on a dark version of the watch. The images show the Alpine strap of the Apple Watch Ultra. This watch strap has sliding pieces at the end, which always match the color of the Apple Watch.

The ends of the Apple Watch straps are made of black material, which reveals that Apple was indeed working on a new color for the Apple Watch Ultra. According to rumors, the company was already considering a dark Apple Watch Ultra for the first generation, but that never materialized. So for the second generation we have to make do with just one color again.
It is not known why Apple decided not to release the black Apple Watch Ultra. Instead, Apple has given the second generation a brighter screen. In addition, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 runs on the new S9 chip, which we also see in the Apple Watch Series 8. The watch is therefore slightly faster than the first generation Apple Watch Ultra, but other than that few changes have been made.
Second generation cheaper
Perhaps the most important change with the Apple Watch Ultra 2: the watch is cheaper than the first generation. Apple launched the Apple Watch Ultra in 2022 for 999 euros, while the second generation ‘only’ cost 899 euros. So we don’t have a black Apple Watch Ultra, but the watch is a hundred euros cheaper than the first model.
