March 14 is International Pi Day, probably the most important day to learn how to type the π symbol on your Mac or iPhone. We explain!
How do you type the Pi symbol on a Mac or iPhone?
Pi is the number that indicates the ratio between the circumference and the diameter of a circle. The number has an infinite number of decimal places, but it starts with 314. That is why Pi Day falls on March 14, because in America (where Pi Day originated) you write that date as 3-14. If you want to get it right, you of course use the symbol π instead of Pi. But how do you type that on your Mac or iPhone?
π on your Mac
On the Mac it’s really quite simple. But of course you just have to know. It goes like this:
- Press and hold the ‘option’ button on your keyboard;
- Type the letter ‘p’;
- Release the button again.
That’s all. It doesn’t matter which app you do it in or with which font. Typing π this way always works.
π on your iPhone
It’s a little more difficult to type π on your iPhone and iPad. You must first add a new keyboard. You do this as follows:
- Open the Settings app;
- Tap ‘General’ and then ‘Keyboard’;
- Tap ‘Keyboards’ and then ‘Add keyboard…’;
- Scroll down a bit and tap ‘Greek’.
Now if you want to type the π symbol, press the globe at the bottom left of the keyboard and choose the Greek keyboard. Tap the π symbol, which is on the top row, the second symbol from the right. Then press the globe again to return to the Dutch keyboard.
