It looks like Google is putting a lot more work into software this year. Not only did Android 12 bring some big changes from previous Android versions, but the company is also working on a version of Android optimized for tablets and foldable phones. That version is currently being tested and today Google has the Pixel 3a and 3a XL added to the list of supported devices.
Android 12L update schedule
We are currently in the preview phase of Android 12L, developers can start working with the first developer preview since the end of October. Starting in December, Google will release the official beta for nine Pixel phones, including the Pixel 3a and 3a XL. Google has not given specific dates, so it is not known when exactly the OTA will be shown on the Pixel phones.
Below is the list of Pixel phones that can be signed up for the Android 12L beta program. The Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL have been added to that, but the Pixel 4 XL is strangely enough not to be seen in the list.
- Pixel 6 Pro
- Pixel 6
- Pixel 5a 5G
- Pixel 5
- Pixel 4a (5G)
- Pixel 4a
- Pixel 4
- Pixel 3a XL
- Pixel 3a
Android 12L
Android 12L is for foldable phones, tablets and Chrome OS. Android 12L is basically just Android 12 but with a user interface optimized for larger screens. You can think of it as a Pixel Feature Drop but for Android.
The Android 12L preview program allows developers to optimize their apps for the larger screens of these devices. In this way, Google wants users to get a better experience on any device, no matter how big the screen is.
