A toothpaste that you can mix yourself: This plastic-free toothpaste alternative was developed by a Swiss start-up. You can find out how sustainable the new product really is here.

Sustainable toothpaste alternatives already exist, for example toothbrush powder or tablets. But many people don’t like the dusty feeling of powders and tablets in their mouths. The green start-up “Simply Less” has a solution to this problem: the toothpaste powder “Paudi”.

Users do not have to foam the dry powder in their mouths, but mix it into toothpaste at home in the desired dosage. The finished paste can then be filled into the associated pump dispenser and used like conventional toothpaste. The advantage of this toothpaste is that it avoids unnecessary plastic waste as the powder comes in a paper bag. In addition, the transport volume is lower.

Annika and Raphael Schär founded “Simply Less” in 2018. In the start-up’s range you can find everything you need for an environmentally friendly everyday life, from beeswax towels to solid shampoo.

The start-up was able to gain financial support for its innovative toothpaste powder through a crowdfunding campaign, so that it can now start production. When and where the product will be available is still unclear. But is the “Paudi” toothpaste powder really as sustainable as it is advertised?

certification: The Swiss start-up plans to have the toothpaste powder certified. It’s supposed to be that Natural cosmetics certificate Natrue received, which is considered a recommendable international standard for natural and organic cosmetics. Products that bear the Natrue label meet certain quality criteria: They consist exclusively of natural or nature-identical substances and contain no harmful substances such as microplastics, siliconessynthetic fragrances or mineral oils.

ingredients: The toothpaste powder “Paudi” should be available as a variant with or without fluoride. In terms of taste, a fresh menthol aroma awaits you. The start-up does not reveal the specific ingredients, but refers to the planned Natrue label certification. However, the powder does not do completely without preservatives, so that the shelf life of several weeks can be guaranteed. But here, too, “Simply Less” assures that only those preservatives will be included that meet the criteria of natural cosmetics.

Utopia says: Sustainable toothpaste with potential

The toothpaste in powder form offers the potential to replace conventional toothbrush tablets or toothbrush tubes. Thanks to the planned natural cosmetics certification and the reusable pump dispenser, the product “Paudi” protects the environment: there is no unnecessary plastic waste and it contains no substances that could harm nature or humans.

The creamy consistency of the mixed powder could also convince those who have previously avoided plastic-free oral hygiene products such as powders and tablets due to the dusty mouthfeel.
