Police give away free AirTags and there is a good reason for that

According to the police, there is such a useful application for AirTags that they give away free copies. This is what’s going on.

Ever since AirTags were released in 2021, they have been used to prevent car theft. Or at least for the quick recovery of stolen cars. In Colorado, United States, the success rate was so high that the Arvada police gave away free AirTags for the first time on January 19.

It is not known how many AirTags the police purchased, but half of the available AirTags were given away during an event. Each AirTag also included a free car sticker. It contains the text ‘Warning — Tracker Equipped: This vehicle can be traced by police if stolen!’ (‘Warning – Equipped with a tracker: This vehicle may be tracked by the police if stolen!’).

Successes of AirTags

The AirTags that first came onto the market in 2021 were an immediate success. They also soon became widely used in suitcases and cars. There have been many initial concerns about using AirTags for stalking. Apple has from the beginning anti-stalking measures built in and steadily improved over time.

In the four years that AirTags have lasted, police have recovered numerous stolen cars with them. But for example, a child has also been arrested for stealing signs for a presidential campaign. And a secret German intelligence service has been exposed. They also discovered that airlines regularly lie about where lost luggage ended up.

Apple is expected to renew the AirTags for the first time this year. While the design of the AirTags is unlikely to change, the updated AirTags may offer more accurate location and longer range. The new AirTag may also be more energy efficient, meaning the battery will last longer. The current AirTags cost €33.89, but it is not known whether the new version will become more expensive.
