Well, you can say that many records are useless. Has the world ever gotten better from someone burping the British national anthem hanging upside down for weeks… in a cold store full of tiger sharks? New. In any case, Porsche has made a nice adventure of its record drive with the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, from extremely low to extremely high.
The record of the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is also very specific. It is now in the Guinness World Records book as the electric car that has bridged the greatest height difference: 4842,967 meters. The men behind the wheel started deep underground, in a cave, and drove 2,250 kilometers in just under 34 hours to the top of the highest mountain pass in the US.
Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo started at 540 meters below sea level
Death Valley – the lowest point in North America – is 86 meters below sea level. If you want to go even lower, you have to go into the ground. And so did Porsche. The Taycan Cross Turismo began its record attempt at a depth of 540 meters below sea level in a nickel and copper mine, the Eagle Mine in Michigan.
After the ride up through the mine, it was up to three teams of drivers to ride as fast as possible through six US states to Pikes Peak in Colorado. Along the way, they had to deal with sun, rain, snow, ice, fatigue and the risk of traffic jams and/or road closures. Fortunately everything went well.
With sealed altimeter to the top of Pikes Peak
To make the record attempt official, the Taycan Cross Turismo was equipped with a GPS tracker and an analog altimeter, both sealed. At the top of Pikes Peak, the latter indicated 4302 meters. The Porsche has thus achieved 4842 meters of height difference in less than 33 hours.
At the end of the record attempt, however, things got exciting for the Porsche team. The weather in the mountains is fickle and a heavy snowstorm threatened to make a drive to the end point impossible. Fortunately, it briefly calmed down, giving the Taycan Cross Turismo just 45 minutes to get to the top.
