Porsche can call itself the new holder of a special world record. A Porsche Taycan was chased from Los Angeles to New York and was very briefly on the charger before that trip.

Just a few months ago, Kia managed to score high with a similar record attempt. Then a Kia EV6 drove from New York to Los Angeles and it ‘lost’ 7 hours, 10 minutes and 1 second of charging time during that trip. It earned Kia a Guinness World Record, only Porsche is already taking it. Not quite a bit. Porsche reports that economy driving guru Wayne Gerdes drove a Taycan from Los Angeles to New York and took a total of just 2 hours, 26 minutes and 48 seconds to charge.

The total trip was 4,535.2 km, slightly shorter than the trip the Kia EV6 drove last fall, but not so much shorter as to account for such a huge difference. A quick calculation shows that it was possible to cover about 1,814 km per hour of charging, although Gerdes left with a full battery, so it will be slightly lower. Nevertheless, very impressive. Gerdes did the trip with a Taycan with Performance battery Plus. This is normally good for a driving range of 458 km (WLTP), but the American has of course done everything he can to wring out as many kilometers as possible and thus also to limit the number of charging stops. According to Porsche, he also planned the ideal route in advance to drive from fast charger to fast charger as efficiently as possible. Guinness World Records inspectors were there as witnesses throughout the trip to make sure there was no cheating.
