Consumption determined on owners’ fuel receipts

The Fiat 500 has been around for more than fifteen years and is still being sold. At the time, the model had various powertrains, of which the two-cylinder TwinAir is perhaps the best known. It should be frugal, but how is that in practice?
In the section ‘Practical experience’ we already paid attention to the Fiat 500, where one of the owners referred to the modest block as ‘an engine with some frayed edges’. Although the sound is not to everyone’s taste, the turbo versions, which we look at in this article, are certainly quite eager. The TwinAir has now been replaced by a 1.0-liter three-cylinder with mild hybrid technology.
Consumption Fiat 500 TwinAir Turbo
Most 500 TwinAirs have a turbo, only the 60 hp variant has to do without a cochlea. We sweep the TwinAir Turbo 80 and 85 in one heap and find a consumption of 1 in 16.9 (6 l/100 km). The most unfavorable value is 1 in 13.7 (7.3 l/100 km), set by a sporty driver with four-season tires, according to his own words. At the other end of the list is a TwinAir 80 S from 2014, which averages 1 in 20.8 (4.8 l / 100 km). Together with this 2012 TwinAir 85 Street, the only 500 TwinAir that breaks the 1 in 20 barrier.
Consumption Fiat 500 1.2
Significantly fewer users of the Fiat 500 1.2 keep track of their consumption, but it does give an indication of the consumption of this 69 hp four-cylinder. On average, drivers with this older engine drive 1 to 15.4 (6.6 l/100 km), the most economical driver even scores 1 to 11.9 (8.4 l/100 km).
Although the Fiat 500 TwinAir is not very economical, it is more economical with petrol than the older and less powerful 1.2 four-cylinder. If we compare the Fiat 500 with another popular A-segmenter, the Volkswagen Up, the latter is considerably more economical at 1 to 19.2. That comparison is not entirely fair, because in the Up you get an atmospheric, so turbo-free engine with 60 hp. Bottom line, the small, moped Fiat is not doing so bad at all.
