You won’t need a screen protector for this iPhone at all

An iPhone will soon be available with an integrated, very hard screen protector with exceptional scratch resistance – you need to know this.

The iPhone that will likely get such an integrated screen protector is the upcoming iPhone Fold. This is evident from a new message from The Elec. Apple has apparently been trying to maximize the robustness of the Fold for some time and a screen protector with exceptional scratch resistance is the latest measure.

Folding smartphones always bring with them a whole new set of vulnerabilities, both internal and external. These are the most important:

  • The fold in the screen.
  • The rest of the ultra-thin glass screen.
  • The hinges.
  • The cables that connect both halves.

The biggest risk

One of the main risks is dust and other debris getting between the two sides of the screen when you close the iPhone. This can ultimately lead to cracks. In addition, foldable screens are more prone to breakage when the device is dropped. This was also one of the many problems with the original Samsung Galaxy Fold.

According to an earlier report, Apple plans to move the buttons to ensure that fewer cables are folded when closed. This should in turn ensure fewer damaged cables. The new message now says that the company is paying equal attention to the robustness of the screen surface. Possibly with an integrated screen protector.

This is how Apple protects the screen

Foldable screens require the use of ultra-thin glass (UTG). As the name suggests, this flexible material is considerably more vulnerable than the glass used for most smartphones. And especially if the device falls while it is folded, for example.

According to The Elec, Apple therefore plans to use a much stronger integrated screen protector. Stronger than the screen protectors used in Samsung’s foldable devices. Samsung uses polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film for this. Apple apparently wants to add an extra protective layer known as polyimide (PI) film (see image above).
