It seems to be happening more and more often: spam messages on Instagram. Do you no longer want to receive disturbing messages? We tell you how to prevent this.
Spam on Instagram
Are you also increasingly bothered by spam on Instagram? Then you are not alone, because many users have been receiving unwanted messages from fake accounts lately. These accounts are often intended to steal money or login details from other users on Instagram. This happens in different ways, often the accounts try to follow you and send you a spam message in a private or group conversation.
Not only can this be annoying, it can also cause you to lose money or data. These spam messages are often easy to recognize, but this will become increasingly difficult in the future. It is therefore wise to protect your profile in any case, so that you do not have any unwanted fake accounts in your list of followers. You can also disable everyone from sending you a message. That’s how you do that.
Preventing unwanted followers
Meta, the company behind Instagram and Facebook, already has a system to combat spam accounts. Algorithms are used to try to recognize fake accounts, but this is not always successful. Do you suffer from spam on Instagram? Then first set your profile to private. You do this in the following way:
- Go to your own page on Instagram;
- Tap the three lines at the top right;
- Choose ‘Account privacy’;
- Turn on the switch behind ‘Private account’.
Now accounts cannot follow you directly, but new followers must first be manually approved. This reduces the chance that you will end up in a spam list on Instagram. Unfortunately, you may still receive a lot of follow requests from spam accounts. There’s nothing you can do about this at this point, just make sure she doesn’t accept or follow back. Deleting is often not necessary, the accounts usually disappear automatically after a while.
Avoid spam messages on Instagram
Do you regularly receive spam messages in your chat list? This can also be prevented by adjusting the settings of your account. To do that, go back to your Instagram account and tap the three lines at the top right. Then follow these steps:
- Tap ‘Chat messages and replies to stories’;
- Select ‘Settings for chat messages’;
- Go to ‘Others on Instagram’;
- Turn on ‘Don’t receive requests’;
- Return to ‘Message options’;
- Tap ‘Who can add you to group chats’;
- Choose ‘Only people you follow on Instagram’.
Now only your own followers can send you a chat message. Especially with a private account, this is an effective measure to combat spam on Instagram. It is hoped that Instagram will automatically filter out fake accounts in the future, but this way you already stop most spam messages on the platform.
