You want to sit high and drive economically. Then a hybrid SUV such as the Toyota Yaris Cross is a logical choice. Not that there is much to choose from, as it fits in with all its competitors – the Renault Captur, Hyundai Kona and Honda Jazz Crosstar – on this page.

The cheapest Toyota Yaris Cross with a hybrid powertrain costs 30,995 euros and we think that is a large amount for such a small SUV. But then you get a pretty luxurious car: the First Edition is the current basic version and has extensive safety equipment with adaptive cruise control, a large touchscreen with navigation and a reversing camera. You know what, we’re going wild and take another version more expensive, with tough 18-inch alloy wheels and an (in 2021) indispensable wireless phone charger. Then we are talking about a car for 34,595 euros. And that’s not even outrageously expensive when you look at the competition.

Adaptive cruise control (795 euros) is my guilty pleasure and a reversing camera (395 euros) is always there. Finally, something small to fill the bag with: a wireless charger for 95 euros.

But the basic version of the Kona Hybrid is also quite complete and costs 28,675 euros – 2320 euros less than the base Yaris.

In the absence of information, here is the Honda Jazz Crosstar, the tough brother of the regular Jazz. It has a few advanced systems, but no 18-inch alloy or a wireless phone charger.
