Lexus LBX

With the brand new LBX, Lexus is launching an attack on a segment where it has not been active before. The Lexus LBX is a compact crossover that is quite a bit smaller than the UX. It is not only considerably smaller, but also considerably cheaper than that UX. AutoWeek has all the prices of the hybrid Lexus LBX.

The 4.5 meter long Lexus UX has a smaller brother: the 30 centimeter shorter LBX. The 4.19 meter long Lexus LBX can be seen as the technical brother of the Toyota Yaris Cross, but it is much more than a Yaris Cross with a bunch of Lexus badges on it. With the LBX, Lexus has a compact crossover in the B-segment in its range for the first time in its history. Not surprisingly, the Lexus LBX is also the least expensive Lexus you can get. It has a starting price of just under 36 grand, which makes it no less than €11,000 less expensive than the most affordable Lexus UX 250h.

Lexus LBX

Lexus LBX: more than a Yaris Cross with Lexus badges.

The Lexus LBX has a starting price of €35,995. For that amount you get a front-wheel drive LBX in the unnamed standard version. Every Lexus LBX has a powertrain that is reminiscent of the Yaris Hybrid and Yaris Cross Hybrid, but still different. The powertrain in the LBX is 136 hp more powerful than that in its Toyota brothers and the battery is also more powerful. In addition, the combustion engine – a 1.5 – has an extra balance shaft compared to the 1.5 in the Toyotas. So a touch more refinement, it is a Lexus after all. Because Lexus does not offer other engine versions, it chooses not to give the LBX a ‘200h’-like designation. Still, there is something to choose from in LBX land.

In addition to the nameless basic trim, the Lexus LBX is also available in five other versions, versions that Lexus calls ‘atmospheres’. From the second equipment level, called Elegant, the Lexus LBX is not only available with front-wheel drive, but also with all-wheel drive. The Lexus LBX Elegant with front-wheel drive costs €40,495, the LBX Elegant with all-wheel drive costs €43,495. The other equipment levels are called Emotion, Relax and Cool. The fifth and final flavor is a special introductory version called Original Edition. The first copies will come to the Netherlands at the beginning of 2024.

Standard equipment Lexus LBX

The basic version of the Lexus LBX has 17-inch alloys, automatic climate control, a reversing camera, a 7-inch instrument cluster and an infotainment system with a 9.8-inch screen. Extensive adaptive cruise control is standard, as are things like Lane Trace Assist and traffic sign recognition. The Elegant and the Relax are the flavors aimed at a more luxurious appearance, the Emotion and Cool focus more on optical dynamics, says Lexus. All four of these atmospheres have two-zone separate climate control, heated sports seats, a heated steering wheel, Driver Monitor Camera, a rain sensor, an automatically dimming interior mirror and a height-adjustable driver’s seat. All four are also on 18-inch alloy wheels.

Lexus also offers three ‘Packs’: the Tech Pack, the Premium Pack and the Advanced Pack. The Tech Pack – standard on an LBX with all-wheel drive – includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Smart Entry, an electrically operated tailgate, more extensive interior air filtration, an induction charger and extra USB ports. This package costs €1,495. The Premium Pack – which costs €2,495 – includes everything that the Tech Pack offers, but adds Digital Key, full LED headlights, automatic high beams, cornering lights and LED fog lights. The Premium Pack includes all of the above and costs €5,295. For those extra euros you get a 360-degree camera, a head-up display, touch buttons on the steering wheel, automatic parking assistance, Front Cross Traffic Alert and Active Noise Control. An extensive audio system from Mark Levinson is also part of the Premium party.

You can also choose the Comfort Pack, which includes a rain sensor, automatically folding exterior mirrors, a driver’s seat with adjustable lumbar support, front seat heating and an induction charger. The package costs €1,195. Above this is the Comfort & Safety Pack, which, in addition to everything from the Comfort Pack, also includes Smart Entry, Driver Monitor Camera, blind spot detection, Safe Exit Assist and front and rear parking sensors. This package costs €1,795.

Lexus LBX in a nutshell

The Lexus 4.19 meter long Lexus LBX is almost as long as the Toyota Yaris Cross and has a wheelbase of 2.58 meters. This means that the LBX has two centimeters more between the wheels than the Yaris Cross. The LBX is 6 centimeters wider and 5 centimeters lower than its Toyota cousin and the track width is also wider.

Depending on the chosen version, a Lexus LBX weighs 1,280 to 1,330 kilos. If you go for an LBX with four-wheel drive, count on a vehicle weight of 1,365 to 1,415 kilos. The LBX can tow up to 750 kilos and has a luggage compartment of 402 liters. However, an LBX with all-wheel drive has a significantly smaller trunk space of 317 liters. A front-wheel drive LBX sprints from a standstill to a speed of 100 km/h in 9.2 seconds. A four-wheel drive LBX is marginally slower in that sprint (9.6 seconds). The top speed is always 170 km/h. Fun fact: did you know that LBX stands for Lexus Breakthrough Crossover?
