VDL Nedcar will shut down production for a few days this week due to a shortage of electronic parts. A spokesperson confirms this after earlier reports from the newspaper The Limburger.
Production can continue until Wednesday, but will be stopped on Thursday and Friday. Earlier this month, the work had to be put down for several days due to the chip shortage. VDL Nedcar wants to talk to the more than 3,000 employees involved about how to make up for the arrears. According to a spokesperson there are various options for this, including overtime.
VDL Nedcar builds the BMW X1 and various models of Mini for the BMW Group. The fact that there is now another production delay in Born has to do with the supply of the necessary chips from BMW, as the company stated earlier: “We depend on the BMW supply chain. If there are shortages, you cannot produce.” A downer for the company, which heard last year that BMW will not continue production in Born after 2023. VDL Nedcar is still looking for a new client. It recently became apparent that SAIC, MG’s parent company, is interested in production at VDL Nedcar.
