Qualcomm has announced a new lineup of chipsets, each targeting the mid-to-low segment. Three out of four will work with 5G and Qualcomm also promises improvements to the speed of 5G internet for accessible midrange devices.
Qualcomm midrange chipsets
A new lineup of chipsets for affordable low- and mid-range devices is ready, Qualcomm says in a press release. These are the four new processors: the Snapdragon 695 5G, 680 4G, 778 G Plus 5G and 480 Plus 5G. There is one 4G processor. Two chipset received only minor improvements over their predecessor. And then there’s the Snapdragon 695 5G.
The latter has a more modern and energy-efficient 6nm architecture and comes with significant improvements over the Snapdragon 690. That was a processor that last year made 5G possible for low-end phones. The Snapdragon 695 5G does that too, but can also promise support for the low sub-6 GHz bands and mmWave for the first time. In addition, the performance of the 2.2 Ghz processor is 15 percent better compared to the previous generation and it is a 30 percent improvement for the GPU.
Overclocked chipsets
We also have the 2.4 GHz Snapdragon 680 4G. It resembles the Snapdragon 695 5G in many ways and is made according to the same 6 nm firing process. The intention of this chipset is that it is an even cheaper alternative in markets where 5G does not yet play a major role.
The Snapdragon 778G Plus 5G is the faster version of the Snapdragon 778G that we know from the Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite 5G, among other things. The clock speed has been increased slightly from 2.4 Gh to 2.5 Ghz. With the Snapdragon 480 Plus 5G, we see an improvement from 2.0 GHz to 2.2 GHz compared to the Snapdragon 480 5G.
