Number of production places more than halved
The spiritual successor to the DeLorean DMC-12 will be even more exclusive than originally planned. The number of copies of the Alpha 5 that will be built has been more than halved.
In the middle of last year, DeLorean Motor Company showed off the Alpha 5. The Alpha 5 is an electric GT with four seats, gull-wing doors and, above all, remarkably few design elements of the DMC-12, which is known from the Back to the Future films, among others. Initially, DeLorean Motor Company was going to build 9,351 Alpha 5s, a number that refers to the 9,350 units of the DMC-12 reportedly built. That’s not going to work. The company behind the Alpha 5 says that the number of production places has been reduced to just 4,000.
According to DeLorean Motor Company, it has had to more than halve its production locations due to supply chain problems. Those who reserve an Alpha 5 from now on must immediately put $3,500 on the table, $500 more than before. After every run of 500 Alphas 5 reserved, the reservation amount will increase by $500. Special: DeLorean Motor Company is blowing along with the hype around so-called Non-fungible tokens (NFT) and transforms every reservation into such a digital piece of property. It even spawns the DeLorean Exchange where reservation holders can trade their NFT.
DeLorean Motor Company is not free from some controversy, by the way. Officially, it is not a direct continuation of the original DeLorean Motor Company. Although the company does its best to pretend to be “the modern DeLorean,” the company’s official name is DeLorean Reimagined. DeLorean Reimagined was founded in 1995 as a company where you could have your DMC-12 serviced. Kat DeLorean, the daughter of John DeLorean who was responsible for the original DeLorean, claims to be the true continuation of DeLorean Motor Company with her company ‘DeLorean Next Generation Motors’. DeLorean Next Generation Motors will also come with one or more of its own cars.
