Record number of car fires in 2019

Insurers registered a record number of car fires in 2019, it reports Dutch Association of Insurers Wednesday.

Last year at least 4,941 cars burned out, an increase of 12 percent compared to 2018, when 4,399 cars were burned to ashes. The Dutch Association of Insurers calls the rising trend in the number of car fires a cause for concern. “A car fire in a residential area has an enormous impact on the sense of security of the residents. Such fires can spread to houses or other cars.”

From 2016 to 2019, residents of Rotterdam claimed the most car fires (573). Follow The Hague (541), Amsterdam (533) and Utrecht (448). By province, the most car fires were reported in South Holland with 3,051 claims.

According to the Dutch Association of Insurers, the actual number of car fires is probably higher. This is because lease cars and third-party insured cars (of course a significant part of the Dutch fleet) are not included in the calculation.
