Renault is working on a new type of electric motor

Renault is currently working with parts supplier Valeo Siemens eAutomotive on a new-generation electric motor. In addition to achieving a greater degree of efficiency, the use of rare earths must also be reduced. It should go into production from 2027.

The new electric motor will be called EESM, which is an abbreviation for ‘electrically excited synchronous motor’. The parties involved mainly work together in the development of the rotor and stator, two crucial parts of the electric motors. To this end, the parties say they want to ban the use of rare earth metals, such as neodymium for the magnets. Renault is responsible for the overall architecture of the engine, Valeo Siemens eAutomotive will develop the stator. The focus is on a higher density of copper in the stator, which, according to Valeo, ensures that the motor can generate more power with less electrical energy. This should lead to an output of 200 kW (272 hp).

It is not clear exactly which materials Renault and Valeo will use to replace the rare earth materials. In any case, the manufacturers have five years to determine that, because in 2027 the engine should be used for the first time in Renault production. The electric motor will be screwed together at the Renault factory in Cleón. This means that the new generation of electric motor is too late for the electric Renault 5, which will be on the market in 2024.
