Renault Rafale: new SUV above Espace

Rafale. That is the model name that Renault puts on the back of its soon to be released new largest SUV-like. It comes above the Espace in the range.

Recently we were able to show you the first pictures of a new SUV from Renault. What that slick-lined SUV will be called has been a small mystery until now. That mystery has now been solved. Renault calls its hefty newcomer Rafale.

As the brand itself says, the Renault Rafale will be at the top of the model range, making the SUV the flagship of the French. Like the Austral and Espace, the Rafale will be on the CMF-CD platform, a base that will no doubt go hand in hand with a range of E-Tech hybrid powertrains. The Renault Rafale can already be seen on a teaser plate, although it is still covered with a tight sticker sheet with busy lines.

Although Renault has dug into its past for the Rafale model name, the name comes a bit out of the blue. In the distant past, Renault was not only a car manufacturer, but also a manufacturer of engines for trains and aircraft. Renault took over aircraft manufacturer Caudron in 1933, resulting in the establishment of Caudron-Renault. All of Coudron’s planes were named after winds, including a racing plane called the C460, which then flew through the skies as a Rafale. Renault will present it on June 18. Not during a car show, but during the Paris Air Show in Le Bourget.
