Apple is working on a new feature that will make it easier to replace the battery in the iPhone 16. This is going to change.
Replacing the battery will be a lot easier from the iPhone 16 onwards
Apple is going to make some changes to the battery with the iPhone 16. This is necessary due to new EU legislation. It states that smartphone makers must ensure that someone can replace the battery themselves.
According to rumors, Apple is planning to use a special technique to make it easier to remove the battery from the housing. With current iPhones, you have to remove two adhesive strips that are under the battery by pulling on them. And then you have to hope that you can pull them out in one go, and that they don’t snap or break off in the meantime. Then you need special hardware to put a new battery in the iPhone.
Apple is now testing a way to provide the battery with a metal coating. By sending a small current through the battery, it will come loose more easily and the iPhone 16 battery can be replaced. Owners of the iPhone will still have to open the iPhone themselves. And that remains quite difficult.
The new battery will likely make its way into one of the iPhone 16 models that will be released later this year. All iPhone 17 models are expected to get the new battery after that.
Apple can still escape the legislation if the iPhone can meet certain criteria. But then the battery should retain 83 percent of its charge after 500 full charges (and 80 percent after 1,000 charges).
