Russia is considering standard alcohol interlock in cars

In Russia, people are calling for equipping cars with an alcohol interlock at the factory. It should play an important role in reducing the number of alcohol-related road accidents.

Anyone who is somewhat familiar with TV programs that show dashcam videos with the most bizarre accidents also knows that many of those videos were shot in Russia. Obviously, this has to do with the fact that almost everyone seems to have a dashcam, but also that there is quite a lot to criticize on the driving style of some. In many cases, this has to do with alcohol consumption, which is still a significant problem in Russia.

To really suppress that, the government is considering having every new car fitted with a built-in alcohol lock. That device, in which the driver has to blow, will or will not start the car depending on the determined level. That message Reuters based on reporting in Russian Kommersant. The government hopes to come up with a detailed plan by the end of this year. Obviously, good agreements are then required with the car manufacturers, because such a development naturally costs extra money in production. It can optionally be installed at importers and dealers. It remains to be seen who will pay for it in that case.
