It will come as no surprise, but open doors also sometimes have to be kicked in: the registration of electric cars plunged into an ice-cold plunge pool after a sweltering sauna at the end of 2020. But January is also a very cold shower for registrations in general.
January kicks off the uncertain year 2021 with 35,193 newly registered passenger cars, according to the latest figures from Bovag, RAI Vereniging and RDC, and that is 20.04 percent less than the same month last year, when we had no idea what disaster was on. our path would come. Let’s add right away that it looks worse than it is, because the changes in the addition scheme for electric cars caused a wave of registration at the end of last year and we will of course miss those cars at the beginning of 2021. Although we expect the precise breakdown into fuels later, the figures up to and including Sunday show that effect clearly. Last month, about 2.5 percent of registrations were fully electric, in December 2020 that was 69 percent and for the whole of 2020 still 20.5 percent. So a big electric dip; as a new phenomenon the EV has to be connected to the supercharger.
The Volvo XC40 is proudly at the top and although that is hardly due to the fully electric version, the plug-in hybrid makes up almost half of that number. The Kia Picanto is also busy, making the XC40 pant in the neck. Volkswagen may have lost a lot compared to January 2020, the brand is still number 1 in the statistics, followed by BMW and Skoda.
Well, the year is still early, but it starts chilly. Regardless, anything can happen. Let’s hope for a speedy recovery and a balmy spring. In any case, Bovag and RAI Vereniging are positive about this. The trade associations are counting on economic recovery, which will close 2021 with 400,000 registrations.
