Samsung ShotControl is a new AI training tool that should help the Dutch 3×3 basketball team perform better on their way to Olympic gold. Samsung ShotControl is the result of a collaboration between Samsung, the Dutch Basketball Association (NBB) and Cheil Benelux.

After SmartSuit in 2018 and FastFrame in 2021, Samsung introduces the third technological innovation in the sports world. Samsung ShotControl is applied to 3×3 basketball, which is known as the most intense form of basketball, where everything revolves around the last three minutes. ShotControl supports the Dutch 3×3 basketball teams to perform optimally during this critical final phase of the game.

Samsung ShotControl measures the athlete’s field position, elbow angle during the throw, hit or miss shots, and even heart rate to monitor fatigue levels. All data is visible on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. With this extensive dataset, coaches and athletes can identify their strengths and weaknesses, use the insights to target their training, and thus improve the athlete’s performance. Samsung ShotControl, a machine learning-based tool, is in continuous development. Within the tool are advanced heatmaps that can be used to analyze the position and accuracy of shots.

2024 Summer Olympics
Since March 2024, Samsung ShotControl has been collecting data from both the Dutch men’s and women’s 3×3 basketball teams, to support them on their way to the 2024 Summer Olympics and other major tournaments such as the European and World Championships. The Dutch men’s team has successfully qualified and will participate in the Games in Paris.

Development of Samsung ShotControl
Samsung ShotControl was developed based on conversations with the coaches of the 3×3 basketball teams, focusing on the challenges within the sport. Aron Roye, national coach of TeamNL 3×3 basketball, says: “The first results of Samsung ShotControl already provide insights that we can implement towards Paris. On the one hand, these insights confirm our expectations, on the other hand, they reveal surprising outcomes that reveal interesting scoring opportunities for players in specific phases of the game.” Dutch basketball player Worthy de Jong adds: “This is just the beginning. In the future, Samsung ShotControl will offer us even more opportunities to strengthen our position in the international 3×3 landscape.”
