Set Default Program on Mac

The Mac always opens a particular file, such as an image, automatically in the same program. Adjust which program that is yourself.

Files are opened by double clicking on them. The Mac then recognizes the type of file and automatically knows which program to open the file with. There is a default program set for all kinds of files. For example, an image opens automatically in the ‘Preview’ program. Is your favorite program not set as default? Then adjust that, so that from now on you can easily open files in the desired program.

Change the default program like this:

  • Open the Finder by clicking the face icon in the Dock.
  • Navigate to a type of file whose default program you want to change. For example, the video file .mov.
  • Click on the file.
  • Click on the menu bar at the top of the screen Archive.
  • click on Show info.
  • Click on the arrow for ‘Open with’.
  • Click the drop-down menu under “Open With” and click the program you want to use in the future.
  • click on change everything.
  • You will be asked if you want to open similar files with that program in future. click on Continue.
  • The default program has now been modified.
