Special fire truck to extinguish burning EVs

Meet the Hiload 6×6 Rapid Intervention Vehicle, a new fire truck touted by its creators as the ultimate fire engine for extinguishing burning electric cars.

Electric cars are by no means allowed to be parked in every parking garage under an apartment complex. This is not only due to the often higher weight of electric cars, which older parking garages may not be designed for. The fear of EV fires also plays a role, as it turned out earlier. The English company Prospeed Motorsport is now introducing a fire truck that, according to the company, is ideal for extinguishing EV fires in parking garages.

This is the Hiload 6×6 Rapid Intervention Vehicle (RIV). That six-wheeled colossus is built on the basis of a Toyota Hilux and, with a height of 1.85 meters, is roughly as high as Land Rover’s Range Rover. In contrast to a traditional fire truck, the fire extinguisher can enter most parking garages thanks to its limited height. The Hiload 6×6 RIV is not just any Hilux with a superstructure. Prospeed Motorsport says it has built its own chassis on the ladder frame of the Hilux. The Hiload 6×6 has a maximum payload of no less than 3,000 kilos and weighs a hefty 5,600 kilos with a full load. The superstructure makes the new fire vehicle 1.23 meters longer than a conventional Hilux.

Prospeed Motorsport equips the Hiload 6×6 with what it calls a Coldcut Cobra system if desired. With this option, water comes out of the high-pressure hose in which an abrasive has been dissolved that can penetrate the bottom plate and the protective layers of an electric car battery pack. With a pressure of no less than 300 bar, this liquid can be ‘injected’ into a battery pack to cool things down. The Hiload 6×6 is currently undergoing extensive field testing in the Czech Republic.
