Spotify app receives update on iPhone (but not for you)

Spotify will soon get an interesting update on the iPhone, but this update is not coming to the Netherlands. Why not?

The statement in a lawsuit between Apple and Epic causes a lot of dust in America. Apple must allow the judge that from now on apps can link to their own payment system. First apps were required to use Apple’s payment system, with up to 30 percent of the money to Apple.

If apps did not use the Apple payment system, they were not allowed to give a link where you can take out a subscription outside the App Store.

That now comes to an end and Spotify does not let grass grow on it. The music service immediately prepared an update for the app. In one blog post Spotify tells exactly what is in the update.

That update has to be approved by Apple, but the music service knows for sure that there are no problems. There is only one disadvantage: the update is only for American Spotify users.

With this update for Spotify, they can now more easily upgrade a free account to a paid account. Spotify can then immediately link to the website where they can upgrade.

Just like the app in the Netherlands, Americans can already see what the different subscriptions cost. But if you click on it, only a page with general information appears. There is nowhere a link where you can upgrade. You must then go to the Spotify website yourself (for example in Safari) to take out a subscription (or adjust it).

Spotify would like to see that the adjustments are also made to other countries. But Apple probably doesn’t feel like it. Yet it would be nice if these adjustments were also made here.

The 30 percent that Apple requires from the app makers for payments is almost always put on top of the price for the consumer. That is why taking out a subscription to your iPhone from an app is usually more expensive than on the website of the makers.
