Spotify gets two new features
You are not looking forward to the two new features that Spotify will soon add. With these changes, Spotify wants to be able to compete better with YouTube and is trying to get users to watch more videos. But of course you don’t have Spotify for that.
Spotify will pay creators based on how often their videos are viewed by paying subscribers. In addition, automated ad breaks in videos will be disabled for paying subscribers to ensure they are more likely to watch videos.
Competing with YouTube
By paying creators directly based on engagement, Spotify moves more into YouTube’s territory. YouTube also focuses on podcasts and already pays creators billions a year in shared ad revenue.
Since Spotify made video podcasts widely available in 2022, their use has skyrocketed. In addition, the number of creators on the platform has more than doubled every year. There are now more than 300,000 video podcasts on Spotify, up from 250,000 at the end of June.
Spotify for Creators
Creators access their payout details in a hub called Spotify for Creators. That hub will also help them determine if they qualify for video payments. Spotify for Creators will also offer more advanced analytics, along with the ability to upload short, vertical video clips.
It remains unclear how much Spotify plans to pay creators. The company doesn’t explain exactly how it calculates payments for videos, saying only that creators can see their breakdowns in the Spotify for Creators hub.
Both of Spotify’s new features will go into effect on January 2, 2025 in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. It is not yet known when the Netherlands will follow.
