Start apps automatically in Windows

Start apps automatically in WindowsTurn on the computer and let all kinds of apps start at the same time. Handy for programs you use every time.

Some programs you use again and again. For example, the mail program, the internet browser or another favorite app. How handy is it if those apps start immediately when Windows starts up? That option is simply there! Easily add your favorite apps.

Enable or disable auto-starting programs like this:

  • Click the Start button.
  • Click on the gear to go to Settings.
  • click on apps.
  • click on Startup.
  • A list of programs and apps that start automatically follows. Click on the slider behind each program to have it started at the same time as the PC or not.

Do you want to add an app that is not in the ‘Startup’ list? Then there are some additional steps:

  • In Windows 10, click the Start button. In Windows 11, click the Start button > All apps.
  • In the list, find the app you want to launch automatically.
  • Right click on the app and click More > Open file location.
    • Can’t open the file location? Then this app is not suitable for automatic startup.

The file location of the app will open. Then add the app to the ‘Startup’ folder as follows.

  • On the keyboard, press the Windows key + R.
  • A message appears. Type in the bar shell:startup.
  • click on OK.

The ‘Startup’ folder will also open. So two folders are open: the app’s file location and the “Startup” folder.

  • Drag the app from its file location to the “Startup” folder. You do this by clicking on the app and holding down the mouse. Move the mouse to the other folder and release the mouse button. The app will be placed in the new folder.

You’re done. The next time you start up the PC, the app will start automatically after signing in.
