Start Office in Safe Mode

Start Office in Safe Mode

When an Office program crashes while opening, the cause is often an add-on with errors. Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint have a safe mode that helps when you can’t use one of these programs normally. This will load the program without the extra features that can cause problems.

Step 1: Ctrl key

For example, to start Word in safe mode, first find the Word shortcut in the start menu, taskbar, or desktop. Then hold the Ctrl key and click the shortcut. This will cause the message to appear: You hold down the Ctrl key† Do you want to start Word in safe mode? click on OK to start the application in safe mode. Then the application opens in the familiar working environment.

Word asks if you are sure you want to start the program in safe mode.

Step 2: Safe Mode

In safe mode, the program does not activate any add-ons. Add-ons are extensions that you have installed to provide the application with additional functions. But there are still some things that safe mode prevents. For example, you cannot save Office templates and the Office program will not automatically open recovered documents. The latter could also be the cause of the problem.

In safe mode you cannot save preferences, the autocorrect list does not load and the list does not save changes. The adjustments you made earlier in the command bar will be rolled back. If you work in Microsoft Sharepoint Workspace, functions such as task scheduler, messages, notifications and synchronization will be disabled.

No templates or recent documents are available in safe mode.

Step 3: Disable Items

if Word, Excel or PowerPoint boots up correctly in safe mode, then you first check which add-ons the program would load in normal mode. Still in safe mode select File / Options† In the left bar choose Plugins† At the very bottom next to the Manage box, select Disabled Items and then click the button Start†

A list of items made inactive in safe mode appears. You can disable or just uninstall that add-in here. To quit safe mode, quit the program and then restart it, but in the normal way.

If the problem persists even in safe mode, it is a good idea to uninstall and reinstall the program.

Check out the disabled add-ins.
