Switching on or off the start-up noise of a Mac

Since a few years, MacBook models are no longer provided with a start -up noise. If your Mac is therefore completely switched off, it will be switched on automatically when you open the MacBook. This was already the case for slumber, but now also with full switch -off.

This has probably been the reason to remove the start -up noise. Because of this you are no one to be a burden to open the MacBook. Do you still want to use a sound when starting up? Then you can activate this again from MacOS Big Sur via the settings, with older macOS versions you use a Terminal Command.

When a start -up sound?

The start -up sound of a Mac can be heard when the computer is switched on and the Power on Self Test (post) is successfully completed. In addition, it is good to realize that the sound can only be heard as the Mac not State in silent mode. If this is the case, the sound will not be heard. If you want to use your Mac with the sound on, you can ensure that the start -up noise is switched off.

  • Open  â–¸ System settings
  • Navigate to ‘sound’
  • Call in the option ‘Play sound when starting’

Do you still have macOS Monterey or earlier? Then you will find this at  ▸ System Preferences ▸ Sound ▸ Sound effects.
