Hidden claims history?
You can have a great time with an imported car, but there are also stories of damaged cars that start a second life through import with a dark past. According to Carfax, about 10 percent of imported cars have been damaged.
If you buy an imported car, it is wise to delve into the past of that car as far as possible on the basis of available documentation. After all, cars are not only imported because they are simply attractive models to sell, but sometimes also because they have been cheaply repaired abroad after an accident and can therefore be sold here with a considerable margin. At the beginning of this year, AutoWeek already extensively discussed such practices.
According to Carfax, there are quite a few import cars with a damage history. About ten percent of the used cars that are imported into the Netherlands have already had an accident or suffered other damage in the past, it is said. Carfax says it will now have access to data that will reveal millions of new accident and damage data for imported used cars from Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain and more. Sometimes it is also possible to find out what kind of damage has occurred and where that damage was reported. “More information means more transparency, fairness and improved negotiating positions,” says founder and CEO, Frank Brüggink.
