Tendonitis can occur, especially in the hands and feet. They cause pain when moving. In this article you will find some home remedies for it.

Tendonitis usually occurs due to overloading or frequently repeated movements in the tendon area. This can happen, for example, through a lot of typing, lifting or exercise. Typical symptoms include pain, swelling and limited mobility. Luckily, you can often treat tendonitis at home. In this article we will show you how you can relieve the symptoms and get fit again quickly.

The “cover” around the tendon itself is called the tendon sheath. The tendon sheath ensures that the tendon can glide smoothly during movements in the joint without causing unnecessary wear and tear. However, when this sheath becomes irritated through repeated strain or overuse, it becomes inflamed – tendonitis occurs. The inflammation can lead to pain, swelling and limited mobility in the joint. The wrists, ankles, shoulders and elbows are particularly affected.

Tendonitis occurs due to repetitive, monotonous movements. Therefore, climbers, golfers and tennis players, for example, are particularly at risk. Some professional groups – such as painters, musicians or gardeners – are also affected more often than others due to their repeated movements.

In exceptional cases, the inflammation can also be caused by bacteria.

Home remedies for tendonitis

The best remedy for tendonitis is to immobilize the affected joint as much as possible. Temporarily, for at least two to three days, avoid as much as possible the movement that led to the inflammation or at least reduce it. Other things you can do yourself to relieve the inflammation:

  • If necessary, wear a splint or bandage or use tape to further stabilize the joint.
  • Mix vinegar with water (one tablespoon per glass of water) and soak a towel in it, for example. Then wrap it around the painful areas. This way you can cool the affected joint.
  • You can also use a cooling pad or apply a quark compress, which is said to have an anti-inflammatory effect. To do this, spread the quark on a cloth as thick as a finger and wrap it around the affected areas. Then wrap a small towel or another cloth around the curd wrap. Leave the wrap on the joint until the curd becomes crumbly. You can repeat this application several times a day.
  • While some sufferers benefit from treating tendonitis with cold, others find heat to be better. Lightly warm a cherry stone pillow and place it on the inflamed area. Make sure it isn’t too hot so you don’t burn yourself.

If the pain is very severe or lasts longer than three days, you should seek medical advice. If necessary, you will be prescribed an anti-inflammatory medication.

Tip: It would of course be better not to get tendonitis in the first place. If the overload occurs due to screen work, for example, you should improve the ergonomics of your workplace.
