Tesla slows down
Tesla is slowing down a bit. Not only are jobs being cut in various places in the company, plans to take the innovative Gigacasting to the next level would now be put on hold.
Tesla is currently making waves with its so-called Gigacasting, where large parts of the cars are made in one piece in the Giga Press. This reduces production costs, because it makes car production faster and easier. In the future it should go one step further, Tesla announced last year. That’s what the company comes up with Reuters back now.
The idea was to cast the bottom, sides, front and rear of the cars in their entirety and then bring them together on the assembly line. Significant savings could be made, especially by making the base plate in one piece. However, this production method, which was referred to last year as ‘unboxed’, does not seem to be happening yet.
The brakes were reportedly put on last year and plans for a cheaper model that had to be built in this way have reportedly been canceled for the time being. However, Tesla recently indicated that a cheaper Tesla is indeed on the way, even earlier than initially planned. It therefore seems that ‘Model 2’ will be less new than the idea was previously, because Tesla is now reverting to existing parts instead of becoming a completely newly developed and produced car in a new way.
