RAV4 dethroned

The time has come: a fully electric car sits on the global sales throne. The Tesla Model Y is the new best-selling car worldwide. The Model Y takes over from the Toyota RAV4.
Tesla has done it: it has the most popular car in the world in its range. The Tesla Model Y sold 267,171 units worldwide in the first quarter of this year, taking the lead. That reports Reuters that could see Jato’s figures that had not yet been shared publicly. The Toyota Corolla was in second place, followed by the Toyota Hilux. The Tesla Model Y beat the Toyota RAV4 in fourth place. The RAV4 was the best-selling car worldwide last year. Toyota also took fifth place, thanks to the Camry.
It always takes a while before all global sales figures are collected and that is why it is only now possible to make a reliable statement about the first quarter for the first time. Last month it was already announced that the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling new car here in Europe in the first quarter. Jato analyst Felipe Munoz counters Reuters that the Tesla Model Y is also likely to be the best-selling car worldwide for all of 2023.
Incidentally, the success is largely due to Chinese sales. There, 94,469 Tesla’s Model Y were sold in Q1. In the United States it was 83,664 and here in Europe 71,114. In the Netherlands, the Tesla Model Y is also doing well. For the time being, the Model Y is also leading in the sales figures here, with 3,949 units sold (up to and including April) this year.
