Color betrays origin
The basic version of the wildly popular Tesla Model Y has always been built in China and shipped to Europe, but all variants of Tesla’s crossover are now built in Germany.
Where Teslas are built often depends on the version in recent years. With the Model Y, it was long the case that the base model, which is very popular with a range of 455 kilometers and a price tag of just under 48 grand, rolled off the production line in China. The Long Range and Performance variants came from the Berlin area since the opening of the factory. Now the latter applies to all versions. The rear-wheel drive entry-level model of the Tesla Model Y is now also being built in Europe.
The fact that the car now comes from Berlin has one concrete consequence for the product itself: the colour. After all, Gigafactory Berlin is the only Tesla factory that uses the colors ‘Quicksilver’ and ‘Midnight Cherry Red’. That somewhat lighter gray and somewhat darker red replace the ‘old’ shades of gray and red, so now also on the RWD, where the aforementioned colors were previously reserved for the four-wheel drive models. By the way, the paint colors are still very expensive: Quicksilver costs €3,000 extra, Cherry €3,200. Ouch.
