Twitter ended its official Mac app last week. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternative Twitter apps to install. We list our favorites.
Three alternative Twitter Mac apps
Twitter made a striking decision: the company took the social network’s Mac app offline on March 16. Instead, Twitter hopes users will return to using the website to post and read tweets. However, as far as we are concerned, a good Twitter app is a lot easier to use. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives in the App Store in addition to Twitter’s own Mac app.
1. Twitterific 5 (8.99 euros)
After the news that Twitter is pulling the plug on the Mac app, Twitterific decided to immediately lower its price. A great opportunity, because this is a great app that wants to get in the way as little as possible. It may take some getting used to the minimalist design in the beginning, although you are free to adjust the theme, font and size of the font in the settings. If you’re also using Twitterific’s iPhone app, the two timelines will be synced. This allows you to stop reading your timeline on your iPhone and pick up right where you left off on your Mac.

2. Tweetdeck (free)
If you are looking for a free alternative, Tweetdeck is the best choice. This app was acquired by Twitter a few years ago, and is therefore best suited to the way the current Twitter app for macOS works. In the app you can easily switch between multiple accounts, you can create extra columns yourself and there is a nice night theme available. The only downside to Tweetdeck is that it crashes several times a day since macOS High Sierra. So let’s hope an update fixes this soon.

3. Tweetbot (10.99 euros)
The favorite app of many avid Twitter users. Like the accompanying iOS app, Tweetbot is not the cheapest app, but the options are very extensive. The design is sleek and fresh, and the app has devised and added some useful functions of its own over the years. Tweetbot is also nice to your eyes and has a nice night mode. When Twitter rolls out new features (like polls and live streams), Tweetbot is always one of the first apps to add it as well.
