Do you regularly listen to music with your AirPods? Then there is a good chance that you are not yet using the best function of the AirPods. This is how you turn it on!
Best feature of the AirPods
It has been a while since Apple released the AirPods Pro 2, but the earphones are still regularly added new functions. For example, the AirPods have been expanded in iOS 17 and iOS 18 with useful features, including various hearing functions and call detection. The latter function is extremely useful, but is disabled by default with the AirPods Pro 2. That’s a shame, because it is perhaps the best function of the AirPods.
With Call Detection, the AirPods register conversations around you, so that the earphones know when someone is talking to you. Have you enabled Call Detection? The volume of the AirPods is then automatically reduced when someone starts a conversation. Transparency mode is also enabled to clearly understand the person. This way you avoid missing a conversation or accidentally ignoring someone. Does that ever happen when you wear AirPods? We explain how to enable Call Detection!

Enable call detection
Call detection is therefore an extremely useful function that ensures that you do not miss a conversation. The feature is currently only available with the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4. Do you want to enable the function of the AirPods? Then your iPhone must be running iOS 17 or newer. You can see under ‘Settings > General > Software update’ whether you still need to update your device. Did that work? Then you turn on Call Detection as follows:
- Remove the AirPods from the case and put them in;
- Open ‘Settings’ on your iPhone;
- Go to ‘Bluetooth’;
- Tap the information symbol (i) behind your AirPods;
- Scroll down;
- Turn on the switch behind ‘Conversation detection’.
With Call Detection enabled, the AirPods volume will automatically decrease when someone is talking to you. The same applies the other way around, the earphones also reduce the sound when you start talking. After the conversation, the volume will automatically increase again, so you don’t have to do anything yourself. The feature only works if someone is talking directly to you, to prevent the AirPods from picking up all the conversations around you.
AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4
Call detection is perhaps the best feature that came to the AirPods Pro 2 with iOS 17. With iOS 18, Apple has added a series of health features to the earphones. You can now take a hearing test with the AirPods Pro 2 to check whether you have hearing damage. You can also use the earphones as a hearing aid or wear them to block out harmful noise.
Can’t find the function in the settings of your AirPods? Then there is a good chance that your earphones do not support Call Detection. The feature was originally only available with the AirPods Pro 2, but also came to the AirPods 4 this year. Are you still looking for new earphones?
