The Dutch borrow more often and more

The Dutch more often borrow money for the purchase of a new or used car. This is evident from figures released today by financial comparison site Geld.nl. Not only do the Dutch borrow more often to pay for another car, the amounts borrowed are also higher than before.
In the first half of 2023, almost 35.8 percent of the loans applied for were intended for the purchase of a new or used car, Geld.nl reports based on its own research. In the first half of 2022, that percentage was still 28 percent, according to the comparison site. It is not entirely surprising that borrowing takes place more often. After all, more new cars were sold in the first half of this year than in the same period last year and the demand for second-hand cars was also quite high in the first six months of this year.
What will probably not surprise you after reading the above is that the amounts borrowed for the purchase of another car in the first six months of this year are on average larger than in the same period last year. The analysis by Geld.nl shows that the average loan amount for a car in the first half of this year was €14,432. In the first half of 2022, that average loan amount was still €13,414. This increase in the loan amount is partly due to the rising prices of new cars. “This is partly because the prices of cars in 2023,” says Amanda Bulthuis of Geld.nl. “Consumers therefore also needed more money to finance a car,” says Bulthuis.
