The Dutch go on holiday by car more often than before corona

Many Dutch people will soon go on summer vacation or are already on the road. An ideal time to look at the figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) to see how the Dutch go on holiday in the summer. What seems? We often go packed and with the car to the hort!

According to Statistics Netherlands, the Dutch went on holiday 21.2 million times in the summer of last year. Quite a few compatriots went away more than once last summer. 56 percent of those holidays were spent abroad. In 2021, the Dutch went on holiday just under 21 million times in the summer. Of this, 35 percent was spent abroad. If we look at 2020 – the year in which the corona virus held society in its grip – we see that the Dutch only went on holiday 12.6 million times in the summer of that year. Significantly less often. Only 27 percent of that was spent abroad. The Dutch therefore went on holiday considerably more often in the summer of 2022, more often than in the pre-corona year 2019 (20.32 million times). However, in 2019, a slightly larger share of those holidays were spent outside the Netherlands (57 percent).

France was the most popular foreign holiday destination in 2022. Just like in 2021. In pre-corona year 2019, Germany was still the most popular foreign holiday destination with 1.8 million holidays. Also striking: in 2022, more than 400,000 fewer summer holidays were spent outside Europe than in 2019. Where 14 percent of summer holidays were spent outside Europe in 2019, in 2022 this was just over 10 percent. The Dutch therefore stay closer to home. It is therefore not surprising that we see an increase in the use of the car for the summer holidays. Last year, the car was chosen as the means of transport for almost half (49 percent) of foreign holidays. In 2019, that percentage was still 44 percent. The Dutch took the plane for 35 percent of summer holidays abroad. In 2019, that percentage was still 45 percent. The Dutch also took the train more often in 2022 (8 percent versus 4 percent in 2019).

How are you going on holiday this summer? Will you take the car this year or not? And has this changed compared to 2019? Let us know in the comments! We wish those who are still going on holiday a happy holiday. Those who are already on holiday: enjoy it!
