Mazda celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Mazda CX-5. That is certainly worth a party, because the CX-5 has been very successful for ten years and was also the cradle of the current design language and a successful CX model series. A look back!

The Mazda CX-5 already appeared in 2011, but only appeared on the price lists shortly after the start of 2012. This means that the car has been a fixture in the Mazda range for a decade now, early 2022. A very important value, moreover, because the CX-5 is still Mazda’s most popular model worldwide. Global success kicked off right after its launch and as early as July 2012, we were able to report that Mazda had to increase production of the CX-5 due to huge demand. Less than three years later, in May 2015, the millionth CX-5 rolled off the production line.

In the Netherlands – and undoubtedly in many other European countries – the CX-5 must now tolerate the slightly smaller CX-30 in the sales statistics. Still, the car does very well here from the start, with the (provisional?) highlight being the 4,244 copies that rolled off the line in 2018.

Kodo

The Mazda CX-5 is important not only because of the success it represents, but also because of its design. In 2012, this was the first Mazda to be drawn according to the so-called Kodo design language, and Mazda continues to build on that to this day. Illustrating exactly what that Kodo means is best done on the basis of the CX models that were in the showrooms before the CX-5. Yes, there were more. Dig deep… right! Mazda delivered the large CX-9 here between 2009 and 2010, and in the years before, from 2007, the CX-7 was on the program. Even those cars still look surprisingly fresh, but at the same time they are shaped completely differently from the Mazdas that we have come to know in the last ten years. The clean lines and clear folds of the time have been replaced by a tidy combination of voluptuous lines and organic curves, which proves to be very durable.

The predecessor of the CX-5, the Mazda CX-7

The first Mazda CX-5

The first generation of the CX-5, which in fact succeeded the CX-7, lasted until 2017. In good Mazda practice, minor changes were regularly made, from redesigned headlamps to a different grille and from a slightly modified transmission to modernized infotainment. Yet the difference between an early and a late copy of this generation is hardly visible, because there was never really a facelift.

Until recently, this also applied to the second generation. The model that took office in 2017 was only very recently changed substantially for the first time. In this fresh, yet very recognizable form, the car can continue for years to come, after which a really new edition will undoubtedly appear. Perhaps there will also be a version with a charging port, because so far the CX-5 has been successful entirely on liquid energy sources.
