Especially more arrests and speeding fines

Significantly more traffic fines were handed out than last year. In the first four months of this year, the number of fines for road users was 9.1 percent higher than in those months last year.
From January to April of this year, according to the Ministry of Justice and Security, 2,662,482 traffic fines were issued. Last year there were still 2,440,672 in that period. The majority of traffic violations are still detected with a speed camera, mobile speed camera or average speed check. 925,490 speeding offenses were recorded with a speed camera (+0.8 percent), 454,284 with a mobile speed camera (+3.5 percent) and 580,290 (-1 percent) with an average speed check.
Striking increases can be seen in the number of stops and the number of fines for entering a road that you are not allowed to enter. The number of stops increased by almost 58 percent from 146,631 to 232,825. According to the Ministry of Justice and Security, this is ‘partly due to choices made by the local authority and the police about the deployment of the capacity’. The number of fines for unauthorized entry into a road more than tripled, with 79,160 fines issued in the first four months of this year. According to the Ministry, this is increasingly being enforced with cameras in cities, so that partly explains the significant increase.
Furthermore, more foreign drivers have also been fined; 255,379. An increase of about 12 percent. Although the Ministry itself does not mention any connection with last year’s corona measures, the increase in the number of violations by foreigners in particular seems to be a clear sign of this. Last year we were still in a partial lockdown for part of the first four months, so there was less tourism. There was of course less domestic traffic than now and that probably also plays a role in the increased number of fines.
