General
Windows is an operating system for computers. Smartphones and tablets also have an operating system. Apple iPhones run iOS, iPads run on iPadOS and Samsung devices, and many other brands run on Android.
Which version you are using can be useful to know. For example, the latest versions of the operating systems always offer new functions. If you’re using an older version, you obviously don’t have those features yet. In addition, some apps only work with certain versions of operating systems. The most recent version of iOS for iPhones is iOS 14. For iPads, it’s iPadOS 14. For Android, it’s 11.
New version
Most smartphones and tablets want to automatically upgrade to a newer version of the operating system. The device notices via the internet that there is a new version and you are advised to upgrade. If you do that, it cannot be undone.
Whether you are ‘entitled’ to a newer version of Android on a tablet depends on the manufacturer. Cheap tablets are sometimes equipped with an older version of Android that cannot be upgraded. For example, Samsung is notorious, which made owners of a Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet wait a long time for the latest version of Android.
